This historical photograph depicts the entrance to the former Hailsham Railway Station in Sussex.
The station was built in 1849 by the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway.
It was located on the "Cuckoo Line" between Polegate and Hellingly.
The railway was important for transporting passengers and livestock for the nearby market.
The line north of Hailsham closed in 1965, and the branch line continued until 1968.
The site of the former station is now a housing estate, with local pub names and road names as clues to its past.
