An electric locomotive and crew on the Hellingly Hospital Railway, a private light railway in East Sussex, England. 

  • The railway was owned by the East Sussex County Council and served Hellingly Hospital, a large psychiatric hospital.
  • It primarily transported coal for the hospital's boilers and electricity plant, but also carried staff and visitors in a separate passenger tramcar.
  • The line was electrified at 500V DC using overhead wires, a unique feature for a hospital railway.
  • It opened in 1903 and connected the hospital to the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway's Cuckoo Line at Hellingly station.
  • The passenger service ended in 1930, and the entire line closed in 1959 when the hospital boilers were converted to oil fuel.
