Hellingly Hospital Railway, electric light railway
This image captures a moment on the Hellingly Hospital Railway, an electric light railway in East Sussex, England.
The railway was built in 1899 to transport building materials for the hospital's construction and was later electrified at 500V DC using an overhead system.
Its primary function was to transport coal to the hospital's boilers and electricity plant, but it also carried passengers.
The railway was unique for a hospital of its time, featuring an electric tram that connected the facility to the main Hellingly train station.
Passenger traffic ceased in 1930, and the entire line was closed and the track lifted in 1959 after the hospital's boilers were converted to oil fuel.
Hailsham station closed to passenger traffic in 1968, and all evidence of the station was later cleared away during the construction of a new road.
