Hellingly Hospital Railway in Sussex, 1903 to 1959
This image captures a moment on the Hellingly Hospital Railway in Sussex, England, which ran from 1903 to 1959.
The railway was a privately owned, electric light railway connecting the main line at Hellingly station to the Hellingly Hospital, a large psychiatric hospital.
It was unique as one of the few British hospitals to have its own electric railway, initially used to transport building materials during construction and later for coal, supplies, staff, and visitors.
The line was electrified at 500 V DC using a single overhead line, as seen in the image.
The specific locomotive pictured was built in 1899 and provided for freight duties.
The railway closed in March 1959, shortly before the main Cuckoo Line it connected to was also closed.
