Broadclyst Station in Devon, England, 1964
This image captures a Southern Railway 'West Country' class Bulleid Light Pacific steam locomotive at Broadclyst Station in Devon, England. The photo was taken on September 12, 1964, and shows the locomotive waiting with an up stopping train.
The locomotive is from the SR West Country and Battle of Britain classes, collectively known as Light Pacifics or informally as "Spam Cans".
These locomotives were introduced in 1945 by the Southern Railway to a design by Oliver Bulleid, featuring an 18-ton axle loading and wide cabs for use across much of the Southern Region network.
The design incorporated new developments in British steam locomotive technology, such as welding in construction and steel fireboxes, to aid construction during wartime austerity.
The station site was strategically important at the divergence of two Kent Coast routes, leading to a multitude of sidings around the junction.
