The railway was a light railway owned by East Sussex County Council. 


It primarily transported coal and passengers to Hellingly Hospital. 


The station was connected to the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway's Cuckoo Line. 


Hellingly Hospital was designed by architect G.T. Hine and opened in 1903.
