The image captures a moment on the Hellingly Hospital Railway, a light electric railway in East Sussex, England.

The railway was built in 1899 to transport building materials for the Hellingly Asylum and was later electrified for general use.

It was unique in the UK for being an electric railway owned and operated by a county council, using 500V DC overhead lines.

The line connected the main line at Hellingly station to the hospital, primarily transporting coal to the boilers and also carrying passengers.

The system used small, four-wheeled electric locomotives, one of which is pictured here.
The railway operated from 1903 to 1959.
