This photograph captures an electric locomotive on the Hellingly Hospital Railway in Sussex, England, which operated from 1903 to 1959.

The railway was privately owned by East Sussex County Council and primarily used to transport coal to the hospital's boilers and electricity supply.

It also carried staff and visitors using a separate twelve-seater tramcar.

The system was electrified at 500V DC using tramway-style overhead lines.

The line connected the main hospital site to the nearby Hellingly Station on the Cuckoo Line.

The railway closed in March 1959, shortly before the main Hailsham line it connected with was fully closed to passengers.
