Hellingly Hospital, administrative block
£12.99
This image is of the administrative block of the former Hellingly Hospital in East Sussex, a large psychiatric hospital that has since closed down.
The hospital was built at the turn of the twentieth century to address overcrowding at the Haywards Health Asylum.
It was designed by prominent architect George Thomas Hine and was considered one of the most advanced asylum designs of its time.
The main complex opened on July 20, 1903, and at its peak accommodated just under 2,000 patients.
It was located near the village of Hellingly, east of Hailsham, and featured an administrative block, central stores, kitchens, and a recreation hall.
