The station is the southern terminus of a branch of the Oxted Line.
The line originally continued southwards to Lewes and Brighton until it was closed in 1969.
The station was opened as a terminus of a branch line from Lewes and quickly became an important hub for both passenger and goods traffic.
The image is from a postcard, a common collectible item
