This is a late 19th-century photograph of the Eastbourne engine shed (roundhouse).

The locomotive on the turntable is Stroudley Class A1 'Terrier' 0-6-0T No. 65 'Tooting'.

The original temporary station opened in 1845, followed by the current station in 1846.

The roundhouse in the image was replaced by a larger seven-road shed which opened in 1911 and was demolished in 1912.

'Terrier' locomotives were known for the distinctive 'bark' of their exhaust beat.
